What is powder coating?

Powder coating is the process of applying a dry, free-flowing powder via an electrostatic gun to the metal substrate. We always clean the metal substrate by shotblasting to ensure the substrate is free of grease and mill scale. This ensures the powder achieves maximum adhesion.

The applied powder is then heated in an oven to its melting point which allows it to cure.

Once the items have been brought out of the oven and cooled down the process is finished, there is no waiting for it to dry. Powder coating provides a smooth, durable and corrosion resistant finish.

The powder is applied in a number of stages to ensure maximum adhesion and corrosion protection to the metal substrate. The first stage is to preheat the metal in the oven.

For effective curing of the powder, the metal must be at the same melting temperature as the powder. Then powder primer can be applied.

There is a range of different primers available to suit customer needs including zinc rich and epoxy primers. This is then green baked in the oven and then the top coat is applied. Then the whole job is reheated to fully cured.

We offer a wide range of powders in different colours, finishes and gloss levels. We carry an extensive stock of RAL colours. However, should you require a colour, which we do not stock, and we can normally order 'specials' within 1-3 days. Should you require extra protection we can use various corrosion resistant zinc-rich primers on your items or zinc metal spraying.

If your product requires any masking/bunging of parts (i.e. threaded parts, etc.) we can apply special heat resistant tapes and bungs to ensure these parts are free from powder for ease of assembly.

We can accommodate large items and small items in one of our ovens. Please find the dimensions of our ovens below.

Oven 1: 2.1m(height) x 4 m(width, opening of 3m) x 8m(length, working length of 7.6m) Oven has four tracks, to hang and push items into the oven. Also has a central monorail which supports items up to 2 tons.

Oven 2: 3m (height) x 4m (width) x 6.5 m (length)

Where required, items can be specially packed for transport using banding, shrink film, cardboard and then palletised for easy loading/unloading. Our premises have good access for all types of transport vehicles and we have a number of different forklift trucks for lifting items (up to 13 tonne) onto lorries.
